Hi all.

Hope you’ve had a relaxing Summer and re-charged your batteries.

Thanks must go to John and committee members for organising all the social
events over the last few weeks. Even though we haven’t had a show to work
on the rent still had to be paid and finding £300 a month isn’t easy. There are
more events coming up so if you haven’t attended one yet then make space
in your diary for 30 th Oct – Rocky Horror ( dressing up is encouraged!) Mama
Mia on 27 th Nov, Follies and Friends on 29 th Nov.

Down the Rabbit Hole!

First reading will be on 16th November at 7.00pm (please note this is a change
from the original date of 23rd November). As you will remember this show is in
place of the Autumn show. It will be a combination of age groups with 20 parts
up for grabs. There will be about 10 production numbers, songs include 59th
Bridge Street song, Ugly Bug Ball, You’ll always find me in the kitchen at Parties,
Stand By Me and ……………..

If you would like to read the script before the night let me know and I’ll email
it to you.

Rehearsals will only be twice a week with plenty of time off for Christmas so I
am hoping for better attendance.

If you would like to help on the creative side of things there is plenty for you
to do – costumes, painting, props etc.

The committee are hoping to put together a publicity team to make sure
posters are going up in all the right places etc. so if you fancy doing that let
me know.

Membership has been dwindling lately so if you know someone you think
might like to join us now is a good time.

Bar

This newsletter falls to me to write, as Bar is extremely busy with our next show – Friends Lost and Friends Returned. More of that later.

Since the last Newsletter we enjoyed the really successful run of “It’s Today”. This was Tanya’s first production with us, although she has been so involved over recent years it didn’t feel like that! We had some very enthusiastic audiences and numbers grew each day as we went on, which demonstrates what we have always said – word of mouth is everything! So make sure you never miss an opportunity to mention our next show.

Which is, of course, Friends Lost and Friends Returned. The cast are working flat out to get these two one act plays ready in time for 31st July to 2nd August. We could still do with some help for set painting and costumes, so if you can lend a hand please don’t delay, contact Paul and Dika respectively as soon as you can.

As mentioned in the last newsletter we have decided this year not to have an October production, but instead to run a joint kids/adults production in February. That will leave us with the autumn where we can do lots of other things!

There have been a lot of really useful ideas, and we soon hope to have a programme that includes some or all (in no particular order) of:

  • Sing-along film shows. We hope to be able to put on Grease, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Mama Mia.
  • a Salsa night – run by Nic Morrison
  • a Barn Dance
  • a Race Night courtesy of Alan Jewell (those who have been to one before are still laughing apparently)
  • a “Follies and Friends” cabaret night put on by Tanya and her dance pupils. Provisional date 29th November
  • a video night with pasties in August to view the “It’s Today” DVD – which incidentally will be available to buy shortly
  • a kids workshop over two nights run by Tanya and Glynis, with parents invited along to see the results at the end of the second night
  • singing for fun evenings

Please keep an eye out for all of these – we will publicise them on email and our Facebook group, and please also mention it to anybody you know who doesn’t see either of these. As well as coming along and enjoying them we hope you will be willing to help out with the setting up and running of some of them.

And finally, news for next year. After two very successful cabaret shows we would be daft not to put on another one! Tanya is planning to put together a show week commencing 25th May 2015, and we will need lots of eager singers and dancers, plus all the usual production team, publicity, front of house etc. Please plan to be involved if you can!

John

Many thanks for those of you who attended our recent AGM.

I am very pleased and honoured to be taking over as Chairman, and I am extremely grateful to Dick for the wonderful job he has done over the last three years as Chairman, and since the start of time for Players!

At the AGM we had a lively and very useful discussion about the future of Players, and there were some strongly expressed views that we need to continue with pantomime at the core of the society. The committee has taken this discussion away, and thanks to some creative thinking from Bar we have adopted a way forward which we think will allow us to keep the spirit of panto alive without over-stretching our currently thin resources. More below.

We still face the challenge of thin resources though. We are short of people in many key areas, and as Dick reminded us, we are all – without exception – getting older! We all need to put our brains to work on this problem, and make sure our society survives. I will always be happy to talk to anyone with ideas for how we can solve this.

Now I hand you back to Bar, for the rest of the newsletter                                                                 John

The new committee are: President – Beryl Chapple, Chairman – John Clegg, Vice-Chair – Dick Hocking, Treasurer – Dika Jewell, Secretary – Bar Hart. Paul Clark, Neil Harvey, Kippy Jewell, Jason Lessiter, Dan O’Brien, Ed Pascoe, Shelley Clegg and Carole Mitchell with James Mills as our youth rep.

Bookings are now being taken for our Spring Cabaret ‘It’s Today!’ Dates are Tuesday 27th – Thursday 29th May at 8.00pm. Although you can just turn up on the night, if you want a pasty you must pre-book. If you do Facebook please find the poster on our public page and share it to all your friends

This is the first show Tanya has directed for us so please spread the word and give her the support she deserves. The cast are having a great time at rehearsals and are sounding ‘ansome.

Directly after the Cabaret we start rehearsals for the Summer Plays. First read through will be on 3rd June. I need 3 men and 3 women for each play and as many as want to for the wartime song selection. Production dates will be 31st July – 2nd August. This coincides with the 100th anniversary of the first world war.

Our youth production would normally follow on from the plays but following lengthy discussion at our committee meeting and taking into consideration comments at the AGM we have come up with a change. We have decided to move the show to the panto slot.

We will combine our youngsters with the adults but the children will get first dibs on the parts. This should solve a lot of the problems laid out at the AGM. Briefly, there will be one set throughout, one costume per member, backing tracks can be used. The script called Down the Rabbit Hole is an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland so is not that far off being a panto. We will also be saving money by having just one set of scripts and one lot of royalties. Add the fact that we get bigger audiences in February than in October and we hope we are on to a winner.

Other bonus points are there will be a bit longer free time after the plays and the rehearsal period, although longer, won’t be 3 nights per week. You will get a longer Christmas break, you could even go away for the Autumn half-term!
We will be organising some housekeeping jobs (for those who are worried they might get withdrawal symptoms) and we can have some fun nights maybe a Barn Dance or similar.

That’s all for now, see you at the Cabaret.

PLAYERS NEWSLETTER WINTER 2014.

Hello everyone – I’ve just realised that we haven’t had a newsletter since last September. This isn’t as bad as it sounds as almost all of you are contacted by email or facebook so don’t worry, you haven’t missed anything!

Since I last wrote we have enjoyed the Youth group’s production of ‘A fairy tale adventure’ – or rather, an awful lots of you didn’t – it was very noticeable that there was very little support for either preparing for the show or attending a performance.
Just because you are not actually in a show it doesn’t stop you from coming to lend a hand.
The Gordon Giltrap concert was well received and enjoyed . Many thanks to John for organising the event and those who helped setting up and doing front of house.
Glad rags and tiara’s were brought out of mothballs for the annual CDA dinner/disco. No awards for us this year but a great night nevertheless.

Dick Whittington.
Cast and crew are working very hard getting the show ready. We are so pleased that we have some new members joining us this year(It feels like they have always been with us) and this panto has a particularly funny script.
I trust you have all noted the change in performance dates –
TUESDAY 18TH – FRIDAY 21ST FEBRUARY, at 7.30pm. (NB – 2.30 Matinee on the FRIDAY). Please make sure you tell all of your friends, we don’t want them turning up on the Saturday – the wedding party wouldn’t appreciate it! You can book your tickets now, through any cast member or telephone Dika on 01209 211039.
It’s not too late to lend a hand with publicity, sewing, ironing, prop making and the hundreds of other jobs that need doing. We need YOU! We especially need help with small sewing jobs and publicity. Posters are available if you can get one put up anywhere.

After show party / Dinner dance.
We are taking advantage of having Saturday 22nd Feb. suddenly free. At the Seiner’s, Perranporth – 3 course meal and disco £20 pp. As well as being the after-show party, 2014 is the Players’ 45th Anniversary – good excuse for a knees-up and a chance to get glammed up! Everyone welcome. Please speak to Shirley or Celia who are kindly organising this event for us, asap.

Singing for fun / Spring Cabaret
Singing for Fun starts directly after the pantomime; these evenings are a fun relaxed way to spend time with your friends. Why not make a special effort and see if you can bring along a new member. (One thing we’ve noticed over the last few shows is how the cast numbers are getting smaller). The Supper Cabaret shows will be on 27th to 29th May, in Spring Bank Holiday week – programme will be Musicals-based.

Two plays and another pasty. ( Working title !)31st July – 2nd August.
There are 3 men and 3 women in each play, can be doubled up if necessary. As before I would like to include a selection of songs so if you don’t fancy acting there will be something for you.
I will put a list backstage for those interested or you can contact Bar direct.

Youth Production. ‘Down the rabbit hole’.
This is an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland with a selection of ‘modern’ songs woven into it. Details to follow.

That’s all for now, see you at the panto.

Players Newsletter September ’13

Welcome to Porthtowan Players Palace of Varieties musings, momento’s and meanderings!

Just a mo – I’m still in 1910.

Hiya all – diary dates and info coming up.

Just before I leave the last century I must congratulate everyone involved in the Old Time Music Hall. A lot of work was put into it in a very short time (I know Dick and Tanya burnt a lot of mid-night oil). What a fun, successful show it was.

A fairy tale adventure

Shelley and her gang are putting a lot of effort into getting the show ready while still making rehearsals fun for the kids. If you can help with front of house, set building, make-up, hair dressing etc. please contact Shelley on 01326 314696.

Show dates are: Wed 28th Oct – Sat 2nd Nov (matinee only on Saturday)

Gordon Giltrap concert

Tickets are now available here for this fund raising evening. Posters are also nearly ready to be distributed. If you can help with posters or want tickets please contact John (number as above).

Dick Whittington

Dick had heard as many jokes/puns as he wants so I’ll just stick to telling you the first read through will be held on 13th October at 8pm after the kids rehearsal. Rehearsals will begin in early November. Production dates will be February half-term as usual. Be there or be nibbled by a rat!

Singing for fun

This will start directly after the panto. Once again ably run by our own, our very own, Glynis!
All are welcome to attend these fun evenings so a good way of introducing friends/potential new members to the group. These evenings will be lead into our next show….

Spring cabaret this time directed by Tanya. This show will take place during the May bank holiday. More details to follow.

Two plays and a pasty returns for August. As before there will also be an opportunity for those of you who prefer singing to acting.

The plays – ‘After the ball is over’ (3 men and 3 women) and ‘Grandma’s photograph’ (3 men and 3 women) are both set at the beginning of the first world war. 2014 being the anniversary of the start of the Great war.

Please let Bar know if you are interested in being in either of the plays.

CDA annual awards and dinner. 26th October

List now open.

Let Bar know if you want to go. Details to follow as soon as they are announced. (Note from Dick – a number of other groups have joined CDA this year, and will be sending a party to the dinner, so we need to get our numbers ready to send in as soon as booking opens, as space is limited. Don’t miss it! With or without nominations for Players shows, it is our main social night of the year, and always a good evening)

Gilbert and Sullivan

Looking much further ahead, Dick would very much like to put on another Gilbert and Sullivan in May 2015. He didn’t feel we could do this in 2014, because currently we are low on numbers to be able to do a lot of 4-part harmony, so we can only do G&S if this improves. We realise that people can’t give a definite commitment that far ahead, but we do need to know in principle if members (or new members!) would like to be involved, so that we can make a decision. We had great fun – and great success! – with Pirates three years ago, so if you think you might like to be involved, PLEASE let Dick or Bar know NOW. The show is likely to be HMS Pinafore – lots of scope for fun, and harmony singing, with a number of principal parts (particularly men!)

Summer’s here! Time for an update on what Players are up to!

HELLO DOLLY! The show was a great success, with good audience numbers and a very good review from CDA. Despite being an expensive show, we are pleased to say we still made a profit (albeit a small one!) Well done to everyone involved. (But be warned –where shows are concerned, Dick still has a few dreams to be realised!!)

OLD TIME MUSIC HALL Unfortunately, we weren’t able to go ahead with the “Two Plays and Pasty” that was planned for the Summer, so we have decided to do a “Supper Cabaret” show, to raise some much-needed funds. (To the uninitiated, this is OTMH + a pasty, with the audience sitting at tables!!) Rehearsals are already under way, although we are trying not to do three nights a week, so that we can have some time to enjoy Summer! We have a small-ish, but enthusiastic, cast, and it’s going to be a good evening’s entertainment of song, dance and comedy. However, because it has a small cast, we need everyone’s help to publicise the show and encourage people to attend. Posters are now available at rehearsals or from Dick – please help to distribute these as widely as possible. The idea is to raise funds for our future shows, so it affects all of us! Details are: Show dates Wed. 28th and Thursday 29th August, at 8.15pm. Admission £5, including pasty. NB So that we can order pasties, tickets need to be reserved in advance – through any cast member, or by telephone on 07970 783 787 (or 01209 211039 after 8th August)

YOUTH GROUP Our youngsters are working hard and making us all very proud at rehearsals for this years production ‘A Fairy Tale Adventure’. Show dates are Wednesday 30th October – Saturday 2nd November (7:30pm nightly Wednesday – Friday and 2:30pm only on the Saturday). We could do with some help with set building so if you can spare some time please contact Shelley 01326 314696.

FUTURE SHOWS The Committee is working on our programme for next year – look out for an announcement by the end of the Summer! Already definitely planned, though, is our Pantomime, DICK WHITTINGTON, to be directed by Dick. Rehearsals start in November, and the shows will, as usual, be in February half-term.

OTHER STUFF …

Play Park / Duck race With the help of a grant, the Management Committee have been working hard on re-furbishing the Play Park in Porthtowan, and the grand re-opening will be on Sunday August 4th at Noon. It will tie in with this year’s Duck race on the same day, so put it in your diary for a great family day out!

Dramatic Workshop A couple of years back we held a ”Les Mis” workshop for the musicals fans, which was very successful. We would like to do something similar for the drama fans in our membership, and we have the opportunity to run a workshop called “Finding the character”, led by Rachel Riley. The workshop could take a maximum of 12 participants, and would cost £35 each for the day. We can’t book it until we know there would be sufficient take-up, so please let Bar know as soon as possible if you are interested.

Gordon Giltrap Concert As a fund-raising event, John Clegg is organising a concert by the guitarist Gordon Giltrap. (A very talented professional musician – if you are not familiar with his work, look him up online.) The concert will be on Sunday 24th November, and we need to fill the Hall, with tickets at £10 each. Posters will be available in due course, but for any other info in the meantime, please speak to John.

Dika is organising another fund-raiser, which will be a “Sponsor a tea-towel” event. More details in due course, when Dika is back from “up North”!

Any other fund-raising ideas would be welcome – if you have any suggestions please let one of the committee know. Ideally they need to be low-cost, and not require a lot of work. For example a specific show would need costumes, a set and probably royalties, so better to avoid productions, unless genuinely low cost.

This year’s CDA Dinner and Awards evening will be on Saturday 26th October. We won’t know until September whether we are in the running for any awards, but even if we aren’t, it is always a great night out for Players. Put the date in your diary, and we will let you know when we start taking numbers to book.

FACEBOOK We now have a FB group AND a FB page. The intention is that our group will remain limited to members, and we can use it for rehearsal information, messages and contacts, as well as information about activities. The FB page is open to anyone to “like”, and through it they can be kept up to date with details of shows and events.

That’s all, folks – Be in touch again soon!

Greetings all. Especially our newest members. Don’t forget to link to the Players facebook page to keep up with weekly news!

Annual general meeting – 6.30 p.m. on Sunday 28th April.

You should all have had notification of the agenda, voting slip and Judy award nomination either via e mail, face book or paper copy. Please make an effort to attend.

Please send committee nominations to Bar by 21st April, likewise your nomination for the Judy award.

In case you need a reminder of those on present committee ( they are the ones looking tired and drawn who spend so much time working on your behalf every hour they have at the hall!) seriously though, they are:- Beryl – President; Heather – vice president; Dick – chairman; Bar – secretary; Neil – treasurer; Dika – vice chair, Carole, Shelley, Celia, Kippy, Mike, Jason, John and, recently co-opted, Dan. James is youth rep.

If you or someone you know would like to join the committee LET BAR KNOW.

Hello Dolly. 29th May – 1st June.

Rehearsals are galloping along at a great pace. Set is growing daily and costumes are being fitted. It is shaping up to be a great show – you wouldn’t expect anything else from a Dick production!!

However, it is proving to be an expensive production. (Hire of scripts, royalties, hiring some costumes, wigs, set etc etc.) Even if you are not involved in the show, we need the help of all members and friends. Please do all you can to help get bums on seats.

NB To help offset costs, we are selling advertising space in the programme – If you or someone you know runs a business we would love you to place an advert! Prices are: quarter page £12, half page £20, full page £30. Please contact Dika, Dick or Bar for further detail – asap, as the programme is being drafted now!

If you can think of any innovative promotional or publicity opportunities for the show, please speak to Dick.

Summer Play.

Bar has two one act plays which will go on in August. Date to suit cast.

Titles are –‘ Ask the family.’ Cast – Father, unemployed and obsessed with quizzes. Mother, hard-pressed wife and mother, and son uncommunicative 19(?) year old.

Watch what happens during a power cut!

Nostalgia’ is the second script. Cast – 2 married couples plus the brother of one of the women. It’s New Year’s Eve and while playing a board game simmering resentments surface between the couple born during the ‘swinging sixties’ and those from the post war generation.

Being one act plays none of the parts are huge. Please let Bar know as soon as possible if you would like to be considered for a part. Rehearsals will begin after Dolly finishes. The schedule will be as light as possible so you will be able to enjoy the summer evenings.

Youth production.

Shelley is directing a show called ‘A fairy tale adventure’. We hope to see lots of eager members turn up in early June. Please contact Shelley for further details.

Pantomime.

Despite having said once is enough, Dick mentioned he’d quite like to direct Dick Whittington – with dancing rats! Needless to say, we’ve held him to it. More details later in the year.

Players Hoodies / Sweatshirts.

We have recently taken delivery of a new order. We are awaiting having our logo printed on them, then can confirm the price. Please let Bar know if you want one. These highly desirable items of clothing are great value and a wonderful way of advertising our society.

HELLO DOLLY! 29th May to 1st June, 2013 (Half-term week)

This will be one of our most ambitious shows for some time, and will be rehearsed within a limited time-frame. We will hold auditions for named parts (not chorus), to give everyone a fair opportunity to be involved – auditions will be on Thursday 28th February, at 7.30pm, and rehearsals will commence on Sunday 3rd March. Because of the time-scale, anyone taking part will need to be able to give full commitment and not miss rehearsals (except where one or two people have already said that they had holidays or commitments booked). However, we are planning to break down rehearsals for principals/chorus/specific scenes, so it won’t be a case of everyone needing to be available for 3 nights a week for the whole two and a half months. In general, singing and chorus rehearsals will be on Sundays. One of the biggest challenges will be creating the set and staging – anyone who would like to help with this would be very warmly welcomed to the creative team!

CAST (Remember – American accents!)

We need to fill all the above roles. If you know any potential new members who might be interested, please let them know. Please contact Dick asap if you would like audition pieces for any of the above, or if you have any questions. 07870 979 658 or Richard500@aol.com (NB If you can’t make the audition date, we will try to arrange a separate audition time for you.)

Happy New Year to all our members! Welcome to a brand new year of theatrical adventures…

To dispel the January blues, we have our New Year Social Evening on Friday 25th January, at 7.30, at St. Rumon’s Social Club (formerly Royal British Legion) in Redruth. Cost (payable on the night) will be around £3 per person. NB: The evening will include the launch night for Hello Dolly!, but it is not only for that, so please don’t stay away if you are not intending to do that show! We want to see everyone – this will be a great opportunity to catch up and relax together, with a bar, a pasty supper, a theatrical quiz, and a raffle. It’s also an ideal time to invite any potential new members for the group. Please let Dick know asap if you are attending, and to confirm numbers for pasties. (You can use Facebook, text 07870 979658, or email Richard500@aol.com) Anyone who doesn’t book in advance is welcome to turn up on the night, but won’t get a pasty! If you have any spare Christmas presents that would be suitable as raffle prizes, we would be very grateful – please give them to Dick.

PANTO – 1001 Arabian Nights (and a Matinee) 20th to 23rd February

John and Dika are doing a great job – rehearsals are shaping up really well, and lots of work is going on with the staging and costumes. Please do all you can to publicise the show – tickets are now bookable at rehearsals. If you can help with any of the non-performing work, please contact Dika or John. Any offers to help front-of-house, or raffle prizes, to Dika, please.

Hello Dolly! 29th May to 1st June

Dick is busy with the advance planning for this exciting show. As above, the launch night will be at the New Year Social on the 25th January, and audition pieces will be available then for anyone interested in a part. There will also be a chance to see some of the DVD and hear the songs, for anyone who doesn’t know the show. This is a fabulous show with wonderful songs and great costumes and will give us a great opportunity for showing what we can do with our acting, singing and dancing! Auditions will be on Thursday 28th February, and rehearsals commence on Sunday 3rd March. Dick is planning to break down rehearsals for principals/chorus/specific scenes, so it won’t be a case of everyone needing to be available for 3 nights a week for the whole 3 months. There are loads of non-performing things to do for this show (particularly set-building), so all offers of help gratefully received!

Further productions this year will be a play in the Summer, and a Youth production in October – details to be announced later.

Hi all – hope you’ve recovered from the Magic of the Musicals. We’ve had lots of positive feedback from our audiences. The Crit is good too – you’ll get a copy when Dick gets back from his holidays.

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Rehearsals are going well – we’ve got a really talented group of youngsters who deserve all the support we can give. Dates are 31st Oct – 3rd Nov.

1001 Nights and a Matinee.

First read through will be on 16th of September at 8.00pm. If you can’t make it but want to be included please let Dika or John know.

There is two weeks less rehearsal time which means some busy evenings!

Summer – Bar is doing another play. Title depends on number of cast available so contact asap please.
