Happy New Year to all our members! Welcome to a brand new year of theatrical adventures…

To dispel the January blues, we have our New Year Social Evening on Friday 25th January, at 7.30, at St. Rumon’s Social Club (formerly Royal British Legion) in Redruth. Cost (payable on the night) will be around £3 per person. NB: The evening will include the launch night for Hello Dolly!, but it is not only for that, so please don’t stay away if you are not intending to do that show! We want to see everyone – this will be a great opportunity to catch up and relax together, with a bar, a pasty supper, a theatrical quiz, and a raffle. It’s also an ideal time to invite any potential new members for the group. Please let Dick know asap if you are attending, and to confirm numbers for pasties. (You can use Facebook, text 07870 979658, or email Richard500@aol.com) Anyone who doesn’t book in advance is welcome to turn up on the night, but won’t get a pasty! If you have any spare Christmas presents that would be suitable as raffle prizes, we would be very grateful – please give them to Dick.

PANTO – 1001 Arabian Nights (and a Matinee) 20th to 23rd February

John and Dika are doing a great job – rehearsals are shaping up really well, and lots of work is going on with the staging and costumes. Please do all you can to publicise the show – tickets are now bookable at rehearsals. If you can help with any of the non-performing work, please contact Dika or John. Any offers to help front-of-house, or raffle prizes, to Dika, please.

Hello Dolly! 29th May to 1st June

Dick is busy with the advance planning for this exciting show. As above, the launch night will be at the New Year Social on the 25th January, and audition pieces will be available then for anyone interested in a part. There will also be a chance to see some of the DVD and hear the songs, for anyone who doesn’t know the show. This is a fabulous show with wonderful songs and great costumes and will give us a great opportunity for showing what we can do with our acting, singing and dancing! Auditions will be on Thursday 28th February, and rehearsals commence on Sunday 3rd March. Dick is planning to break down rehearsals for principals/chorus/specific scenes, so it won’t be a case of everyone needing to be available for 3 nights a week for the whole 3 months. There are loads of non-performing things to do for this show (particularly set-building), so all offers of help gratefully received!

Further productions this year will be a play in the Summer, and a Youth production in October – details to be announced later.

Hi all – hope you’ve recovered from the Magic of the Musicals. We’ve had lots of positive feedback from our audiences. The Crit is good too – you’ll get a copy when Dick gets back from his holidays.

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Rehearsals are going well – we’ve got a really talented group of youngsters who deserve all the support we can give. Dates are 31st Oct – 3rd Nov.

Please make a note in your diaries. Anyone who is able to help with costumes, props, front of house etc. please let me know. Curtain up 7.30 nightly except for Sat which is matinee only.

1001 Nights and a Matinee.

First read through will be on 16th of September at 8.00pm. If you can’t make it but want to be included please let Dika or John know.

There is two weeks less rehearsal time which means some busy evenings!

Advance notice – 2013.

Oops should I have called this the Summer edition!??

Still, lots of news to catch up on so here goes.

AGM. Not as many of you attended this year, I wonder why. This years’ recipient of the Judy Award was Celia Lessiter – much to her surprise! Another worthy winner.

Officers remain as Dick – chair, Bar – secretary and Neil – treasurer.

Speaking of which your subs are now due. £12 per adult and £10 under 18’s.

A slight increase was agreed for next year when adults will be £15 no change for under 18’s.

Two plays and a pasty.

What a successful production! We had an excellent crit from CDA ( they liked the play as well as the pasties!) It was really good to see our members supporting the show.

Our plays are gaining in popularity with a good following. Watch this space for next years’ choice.

Magic of the Musicals.

Dick is once again creating some wonderful sounds with an enthusiastic cast, and this show really has “something for everyone”!. Make sure you spread the word amongst your friends. Dates are 22nd – 25th August. Our chosen charity for the first night is Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Youth group.

The Lion the witch and the wardrobe has a large enthusiastic cast. I hope CS Lewis won’t mind that I’ve added some characters! Performance dates are 31st Oct – 3rd Nov matinee only. ( The CDA dinner will be on the weekend before this year – 27th October ).

Panto – 1001 nights and a matinee.

Nov half-term is a week late and Feb half-term is a week early – go figure!

This means that Dika and John intend to call a casting reading on September

16th at 7.30pm

Following last years’ Les Mis Musical Workshop day, we are arranging another workshop (Acting this time!) for later this year. It is called ‘Finding the character’ presented by David Richey of ‘The House of Fun Theatre. Numbers are limited (12) so get in quick. Give your name to Dick or Bar asap please.

Appear on TV.

Channel 4 are planning a new series. They want to hear from anyone who had two or more children living at home and are a warm engaging family.

For more info email Twofour via 2012@twofour.co.uk or text 07553 816 385

Building work.

Our thanks, gratitude, congratulations and best wishes go to Kippy and Mike

They have spent a great many hours working back stage and have created a new mezzanine floor/ ceiling/ storage space/hidey hole…

Seriously they have more than doubled our storage space for props, scenery and wardrobe. We were desperate for more space and thanks to the inspiration of these two wonderful guys we should be ok for a long time.

Portreath Fun Day. 29th July. 12 – 6.00

We have been invited to take the role of ‘story lady’ this year. Shelley, Dika and Bar will take turns telling stories. It is an ideal opportunity to give out fliers for our summer show. Please let Dick know if you can spare some time. (Any other publicity ideas or opportunities also welcome).

Next letter when I have some news.

Greetings and a Happy New Year to you all.

 Cinderella. 15th – 18th February.

Carole is working hard, cast are brushing up on their lines, crew are putting finishing touches to the set. The booking office is now open so it’s over to you. If you are not in the show ( and why not??) you can phone Dika on 01209 211309 or book at the hall on a rehearsal night.

Two plays and a pasty. May 3rd – 5th.

We are all set to start rehearsals on 23rd February. I need another female so if you fancy having a go give me a call, it will be a small part, so great for a beginner.

Magic of the musicals. 22nd – 25th August.

Dick is waiting to hear from all those wanting to take part. Don’t forget he has retired (from paid work) so can be contacted at home. He particularly need bass voices, please think of who you can invite. Launch night will be 4th March.

It is early because we have  been invited to perform a short slot at Hall for Cornwall on  18th June. Also there will be a 20 minute slot during the May production.

Dick has his eye on the CDA prize again this year so needs us all to get back to award standard!

Youth theatre. Narnia. 29th October – 2nd November.

I am reading loads of versions of this script. We are going to need LOTS of young actors so please spread the word. Rehearsals begin on May 13th.

Pantomime 2013.

Advance notice – 1001 nights and a Matinee.

First reading 6th November.

This will be a joint production by Dika and John. The script sounds really mad!

Please note the date and give these two new directors all your support.

Les Miserables.

Following the great success of the workshop held in November, the committee are planning to invite the artists back to conduct a  further workshop towards the end of the year. Please let us know if you want to take part. We will try to keep the cost similar to this year, so start saving.

Hoodies – t shirts.

Jason is now our co-ordinator so if you would like one please let him know.

Bye for now – please put all dates in your diary.

The schedule for rehearsals in January and February can be seen on the Diary page and can be downloaded here for printing.

Just a reminder of the New Year party on Sat Jan 7th. It’s at St.Rumon’s Social Club at 7.30pm. I am confirming numbers for the buffet on Friday so if there is anyone who hasn’t booked please let me know asap. It’s £10 for adults and £8 for children.

Hi all. Thank you all for your patience and your hard work again this evening. A change of plan for Tuesday evening. Nick Morrison is not available so I have agreed with Chris that I will run act 1 without music. This means the chorus and the junior chorus are not needed on Tuesday evening. I would like to see all the principals please as I wiould like to take the time to tidy up some of the blocking and practice the chairs routine etc.

To those of you I won’t see may I wish you all a very happy Christmas and a dramatic and sparkling new year. See you all on Tuesday 3rd 2012. Xxx

I have booked the Players New Year party on Sat. Jan 7th at St.Rumon’s social club (formerly Redruth British Legion). Buffet and disco. Probably be around £10 per head if we have 50 people. Can you let me know if you are able to come please? I will collect a deposit of £5 before Xmas. S

Contact Shirley by email or phone

The schedule for rehearsals in December can be seen on the Diary page and can be downloaded here for printing.

Since I last wrote to you we have presented two productions.’ Old actors never die… they simply lose the plot’, and ‘Dark River’.  Both great hits in their different ways. Old actors had the audience aching with laughter while Dark River had them almost in tears. We had good ‘crits’ for both shows and reasonable numbers in the audience, although as usual there was room for lots more.

Les Mis workshop. 20th November.

We are looking forward to a great day! A few people have already paid the full amount, but can everyone else who has booked please note that the balance of the £30 fee needs to be paid in full on arrival – Neil will be there to collect the money. Please arrive at 9.30 for registration and coffee. The workshop starts at 10am sharp. Lunch will be a jacket potato with either ham or tuna. To help with the catering, if you haven’t already done so, please let Dick know asap which you prefer. Finally, don’t forget that you can invite friends or family to come along at 3.45pm to watch us perform what we have learned.

Christmas/ New Year party.

We are busy finalising arrangements for this. We hope to have a buffet / disco as was planned but snowed off last year. Date will be notified as soon as we are able. Keep a look out on our face book page or on our web site: www.porthtowanplayers.com

Cinderella 15th – 18th February.

Carole and team are busy working on this, and casting has just taken place. If you see people muttering in strange voices or walking in a peculiar way don’t call for the men in white coats, they are simply getting into character.

As Carole is directing, Dika has bravely volunteered to be costume co-ordinator. If any of you are able to help with sewing or alterations please let her know.

While talking about costumes, don’t forget with the party season coming up, if you or friends, need a fancy dress outfit, we can supply them at a fraction of the cost of hire shops.

Spring Plays.

Following the enthusiasm in Old Actors, I was asked if we could fit in a play for this year.

I have found two one act plays – ‘A two-berth life’ 2 men, 2 women, set inside a caravan. ‘The luvvies’ 8 characters set around a table during a quiz night. We have discussed doing these as a pasty supper evening, with a few of Dick’s summer show numbers performed during the interval. Dates will be 2nd – 5th May. Please let me know asap if you are available for either play. Rehearsals will begin right after panto and will be one night a week.

Summer Show. 22nd – 25th August.

The Magic of the Musicals produced, directed and dreamed up by our one and only Sparkly Dick. Everything from the Merry Widow to Wicked – with lots in between! NB: Singing will start in March – we need to practice hard to get back to award standard!  As always, we will be short of men – please think who you can invite to come along and have a sparkly, musical summer!

Youth production 2012.

The youth members have asked if they can do Narnia. I am busy reading through the numerous scripts available. More information as it comes. The committee are delighted that the youngsters are involving themselves in every aspect of Players life! We are especially proud of James who has volunteered to become our lighting apprentice.

Christmas cards.

For those of you  new to the group, or with bad memories. Instead of giving out loads of cards to your friends at the Players – you can give one to the whole group and put a donation to the Players funds instead.

Secret Santa. We had one of these a couple of years ago which was quite successful – is there any one who would like to organise for this year?

STOP PRESS!  We may have the opportunity to perform at the Hall for Cornwall next year – but only for 10 minutes! It will be part of a charity concert on  the 18th June.  Please note, though, this will only be open to those who are definitely in the Summer Show – we won’t have time to rehearse something separately.  We will let you know when details are confirmed.

There are lots of dates in this newsletter so please put them in your diaries soon so you don’t miss another action packed year in the life of the Players!
