Summer’s here! Time for an update on what Players are up to!

HELLO DOLLY! The show was a great success, with good audience numbers and a very good review from CDA. Despite being an expensive show, we are pleased to say we still made a profit (albeit a small one!) Well done to everyone involved. (But be warned –where shows are concerned, Dick still has a few dreams to be realised!!)

OLD TIME MUSIC HALL Unfortunately, we weren’t able to go ahead with the “Two Plays and Pasty” that was planned for the Summer, so we have decided to do a “Supper Cabaret” show, to raise some much-needed funds. (To the uninitiated, this is OTMH + a pasty, with the audience sitting at tables!!) Rehearsals are already under way, although we are trying not to do three nights a week, so that we can have some time to enjoy Summer! We have a small-ish, but enthusiastic, cast, and it’s going to be a good evening’s entertainment of song, dance and comedy. However, because it has a small cast, we need everyone’s help to publicise the show and encourage people to attend. Posters are now available at rehearsals or from Dick – please help to distribute these as widely as possible. The idea is to raise funds for our future shows, so it affects all of us! Details are: Show dates Wed. 28th and Thursday 29th August, at 8.15pm. Admission £5, including pasty. NB So that we can order pasties, tickets need to be reserved in advance – through any cast member, or by telephone on 07970 783 787 (or 01209 211039 after 8th August)

YOUTH GROUP Our youngsters are working hard and making us all very proud at rehearsals for this years production ‘A Fairy Tale Adventure’. Show dates are Wednesday 30th October – Saturday 2nd November (7:30pm nightly Wednesday – Friday and 2:30pm only on the Saturday). We could do with some help with set building so if you can spare some time please contact Shelley 01326 314696.

FUTURE SHOWS The Committee is working on our programme for next year – look out for an announcement by the end of the Summer! Already definitely planned, though, is our Pantomime, DICK WHITTINGTON, to be directed by Dick. Rehearsals start in November, and the shows will, as usual, be in February half-term.

OTHER STUFF …

Play Park / Duck race With the help of a grant, the Management Committee have been working hard on re-furbishing the Play Park in Porthtowan, and the grand re-opening will be on Sunday August 4th at Noon. It will tie in with this year’s Duck race on the same day, so put it in your diary for a great family day out!

Dramatic Workshop A couple of years back we held a ”Les Mis” workshop for the musicals fans, which was very successful. We would like to do something similar for the drama fans in our membership, and we have the opportunity to run a workshop called “Finding the character”, led by Rachel Riley. The workshop could take a maximum of 12 participants, and would cost £35 each for the day. We can’t book it until we know there would be sufficient take-up, so please let Bar know as soon as possible if you are interested.

Gordon Giltrap Concert As a fund-raising event, John Clegg is organising a concert by the guitarist Gordon Giltrap. (A very talented professional musician – if you are not familiar with his work, look him up online.) The concert will be on Sunday 24th November, and we need to fill the Hall, with tickets at £10 each. Posters will be available in due course, but for any other info in the meantime, please speak to John.

Dika is organising another fund-raiser, which will be a “Sponsor a tea-towel” event. More details in due course, when Dika is back from “up North”!

Any other fund-raising ideas would be welcome – if you have any suggestions please let one of the committee know. Ideally they need to be low-cost, and not require a lot of work. For example a specific show would need costumes, a set and probably royalties, so better to avoid productions, unless genuinely low cost.

This year’s CDA Dinner and Awards evening will be on Saturday 26th October. We won’t know until September whether we are in the running for any awards, but even if we aren’t, it is always a great night out for Players. Put the date in your diary, and we will let you know when we start taking numbers to book.

FACEBOOK We now have a FB group AND a FB page. The intention is that our group will remain limited to members, and we can use it for rehearsal information, messages and contacts, as well as information about activities. The FB page is open to anyone to “like”, and through it they can be kept up to date with details of shows and events.
